Ski Run Road Challenge Race Report (10/16)

Rick and Jan ran the 4th annual Ski Road Run Challenge at Ski Apache outside of Ruidoso this past Saturday. The race is almost a half marathon (12.5 miles; 20k), starts at 7300 feet, ascends about 2800 feet, up a (sometimes very steep) paved road, then plunges a few hundred feet to the finish at the ski area lodge. Rick ran a P.R. of 1 hr 52 minutes, and Jan also ran a P.R. (and came in third in the women's times, thus taking home one of the much-coveted Ruidoso Bear awards for overall top three finishers) in 1 hr 56 minutes. A beautiful fall day with temperatures near 40 degrees at the start and lots of spectacular views and golden aspens up high. The race ended with the usual wonderful picnic at the lodge. This is a really unique and well-supported regional race that no doubt lots of Socorro runners would enjoy doing in the future.
